On the occasion of Statehood Day, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković conveyed greetings.

“Dear Croatians, in the homeland and in the world, dear fellow citizens,

Today, in memory of the constitution of the first democratically elected multi-party Croatian Parliament, a state institution that has embodied Croatian statehood for centuries through turbulent history, we celebrate Statehood Day.

We recall the courage of the first Croatian President Franjo Tuđman, who at crucial moments led the Croatian people in the pursuit of freedom, democracy and the state, fought for international recognition and enabled the liberation of occupied territories.

The Homeland War, which was just, defensive and liberating, is the cornerstone of the Croatian state and therefore we will never allow anyone to question it. Croatia will always be with Croatian veterans, its heroes who, opposing the Greater Serbia aggression, made the greatest sacrifice and indelibly weaved their lives into our historical path and into the foundations of an independent and sovereign Croatia.

Today, Croatia is a respected member of the North Atlantic Alliance, a reliable partner to its allies and a respected member of the European Union, whose values it shares. Just as membership of the European Union already brings many benefits to our citizens and entrepreneurs, so the imminent entry into the Eurozone and the Schengen area will further strengthen our economy and increase the security of our borders.

There is no doubt that we would find it much harder to deal with the many crises that have befallen us if we were not a member of the EU.

Today, faced with the consequences of the pandemic, earthquake, Russian aggression on Ukraine and the energy crisis and inflationary pressures, the Government stands firmly with business and Croatian citizens, especially the most vulnerable.

In addition to preserving economic and financial stability, which is crucial for further economic progress, our goal is to prevent a social fracture. The fact that we are on the right track is confirmed by indicators of accelerated economic growth, positive assessments by international credit rating agencies, as well as an encouraging report from the European Commission, which confirmed that Croatia no longer has macroeconomic imbalances.

Dear fellow citizens,

in the period ahead, our priority is, with the necessary reforms and with the help of European funds, to raise the quality of life of all our fellow citizens and ensure the fastest and most sustainable development of the economy. The construction of the Pelješac Bridge, the liquefied natural gas terminal on Krk and numerous projects throughout Croatia are just some of the examples of the purposeful use of European funds. Through digital transformation and green and energy transition, we want to make our economy more competitive and ready for the challenges of the 4th Industrial Revolution.

On this day, we especially remember all our compatriots abroad and many emigrants around the world, many of whom have made a great contribution to the defense and international recognition of Croatia. We will continue to help Croats in Bosnia and Herzegovina, for whose equality, as the smallest constituent people in Bosnia and Herzegovina, we are firmly and tirelessly committed.

Our full support and solidarity is also shared by the friendly Ukrainian people, whose defenders today defend the values and freedom of the whole of Europe with their lives, and whose just struggle no one understands better than the Croats.

In today's increasingly uncertain international circumstances, it is our duty to preserve the security of our fellow citizens, and we will continue to invest in our police and strengthen the overall defense capabilities of the Croatian Armed Forces. We have shown this by purchasing the Rafale multi-role fighter aircraft, which will raise Croatia's security to a level it has never been.

Committed to the protection of national interests and the well-being of every Croatian citizen, we continue to work diligently to make Croatia an even more orderly, advanced and developed country.

On behalf of the Government and myself, I congratulate everyone on the occasion of Statehood Day from the bottom of my heart,” reads the message of greetings from Prime Minister Andrej Plenković.
