Five criminal charges against people who caused fires were filed this year by the Šibenik-Knin police. In one case, an arsonist is in question, who caused a fire near Kistanje, while in the other four it is about causing fires through carelessness.

“One person deliberately caused a fire at two locations in June and July. He deliberately set fire to the grass near two houses with a lighter and newspaper. He was criminally charged for arson,” said the head of the Šibenik-Knin Police Department, Ivica Kostanić.

According to the law, an arsonist faces a prison sentence of up to five years. Open flames are also the likely cause of two of the biggest fires this season - in the Vodice hinterland, where the fire engulfed 30 houses and around 20 auxiliary buildings, with damage amounting to several tens of millions of kuna. But the police are still looking for the perpetrators.

In addition to reports from citizens, the detection of arsonists is also helped by the increasing number of cameras in public areas and fire brigade video surveillance.

“In the video surveillance part, we have two systems, Hollistic and Stribor. We monitor 90 percent of the county and intervene immediately. And that's 365 days a year. In accordance with the state plan, drones are used for surveillance,” reported the county fire Chief Darko Dukić.
