A major international drug bust, headed by Croatia, has led to the arrest of more than 20 suspects, 10 of them in Zagreb, Croatian police said Wednesday.
Croatian authorities coordinated the operation with Europol, the US Drug Enforcement Agency, and police in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, and Slovenia. Some suspects connected with the case were already in custody in these countries on prior criminal charges, police said.
The suspects are believed to be part of the Balkan drug cartel, which is suspected of smuggling tons of cocaine, heroin, marijuana, weapons and explosives to Western Europe.
Jutarnji list reported that some of the people arrested abroad are suspected of killing protected witnesses and high-ranking police officials.
