September 18th was chosen in honour of Croatian Duke Branimir who, on this day in 887 A.D, defeated a powerful Venetian flotilla off the coast of Makarska.
Navy vessels and equipment involved in active missions around the Mediterranean are on display on the Split waterfront to commemorate the event.
Maritime threats pose a new set of challenges for Croatia. "The Croatian Navy will have a major role in protecting the stability of the Adriatic and Mediterranean seas", said Rear Admiral Predrag Stipanović. The Naval Commander announced new investments in human resources and professional training programs, in order to keep up with changing global threats.
The Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces, General Mirko Šundov, concurred. "Our greatest strength is in the people we have. Investing in improving their skills and work environment is our number one priority," said the general. "The Navy must continue to develop its capabilities, because they are absolutely necessary in protecting the sovereignty, surveillance and security at sea," Šundov concluded.
Defense Minister Damir Krstičevć extended his praise and appreciation to the country's armed forces for their tireless efforts in combating the natural disasters which have caused so much damage throughout the country.
"Today is a continuation of the symbolic giving of thanks and honour to our heroes who left an indelible mark on the Homeland War. From today onward, the naval base in Split will carry the name of its first commander: Admiral Sveto 'Barba' Letica," said the minister.
The Commander-in-Chief of the Croatian Armed Forces, President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović is set to visit the day's events.
