Croatian public health authorities reported only 88 new cases of the coronavirus and one COVID-19 death on Saturday.

Around 30% of the new infections are in Zadar County. There are around 600 active cases around the country and about 100 people are being treated in hospitals.

As Croatia heads into the high tourism season, the Tourism Ministry is urging the public to be more socially responsible in order to maintain the favorable state of the epidemic. This, of course, includes getting one of the four available vaccines for those who have yet to do so. Speaking in Dubrovnik, one of the country's premiere tourist destinations, Prime Minister Andrej Plenković called for caution with a view to saving the economy.

"We must be cautious and we must try to salvage the season. We have to strive for much better numbers than we had last year, as close as we can to that record we set in 2019. That's in the interest of the industry and the Croatian economy," Plenković said.

Around 46% of Croatia's population has received at least one dose of the vaccine. This is slightly below the target the government was hoping to get to by July. Plenković said he was pleased that some 9 thousand doses were administered on Friday, as part of the vaccination push. His government said last week that it was considering measures to link pandemic economic relief to vaccinations, a plan that was not well received by business owners and unions. However, Plenković said that the debate the issue had sparked seemed to have had some effect on boosting interest in vaccination.

"We are certainly not going to pay people to get vaccinated. Would that mean we would have to give the people that have gotten the vaccine double the amount? We are rational beings. I expect everyone to do their part - as many people as possible, as quickly as possible. That's what’s best for everyone."

Around 1.2 million Croatians are now fully vaccinated.
