The third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine became available on Monday in Zagreb and Rijeka.

The booster shot is recommended for people who may not have developed enough immunity with their first two doses. The third dose is recommended for people over 65, health care and nursing home workers, and people with compromised immune systems. It can be taken eight weeks after the second dose. Just over 200 people turned up before noon at the mass vaccination site at the Zagreb Fairgrounds to get their third shot.

"Turnout today was not as good as we had hoped for but this is something new that people may not be aware of yet,” said epidemiologist Dr. Gordana Pajan.

Croatia’s vaccination rate continues to make only modest gains. Around 46% of the general population and 55% of the adult population is vaccinated.

The new week started off with twice as many new COVID-19 cases than last Monday. Case numbers are usually very low on Mondays, due to slow testing over the weekend, but public health authorities reported 319 new infections today. Another 11 people have died of COVID-19. Hospitals are treating 945 patients, of whom, 119 are on ventilators.

According to the World Health Organization, the number of new cases of the coronavirus and deaths from COVID continued to fall last week in all but one of the world's regions. Case numbers are increasing only in Europe.
