Health Minister Vili Beroš issued a statement on Wednesday saying that he did not believe that the requirement of COVID certificates for workers in the health care and social welfare systems would lead to unjustified firings.

Workers in these sectors will have to prove they are vaccinated, have had COVID-19, or get tested regularly, starting on October 1.

"I do not believe that anyone will refuse any of the proposed measures without a valid reason, but if there are such individuals, then they will have to deal with the employer in accordance with the legal provisions," Beroš said.

Labor Minister Josip Aladrović was also on Wednesday asked whether this meant that workers without a COVID certificate would be fired.

"If the national task force decides that one must have a COVID certificate to come to work, all employers in the health care and social welfare sectors will have to comply. There are labor laws that define all the other options. I would not rush to the conclusion that anyone without a COVID certificate will lose their job. Right now, it cannot be said this is the case," Aladrović said.

Croatia reported 1,812 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday. Hospitals are treating 706 patients, 87 of whom are on ventilators. Another 13 people have died of COVID-19.
