It is the 100th anniversary of the birth of the first Croatian president and founder of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), Franjo Tuđman, which will be marked by a series of activities. The celebration began in Veliki Trgovišće, his birthplace, where an HDZ delegation led by Prime Minister Andrej Plenković laid a wreath in front of the birthplace of the first president. They did the same at the Mirogoj cemetery in Zagreb.

“This morning, the HDZ leadership, led by the party's president Andrej Plenković, arrived in Veliko Trgovišće, the birthplace of the first Croatian president. Wreaths were laid in front of his birthplace, and they did the same at his last resting place at Zagreb's Mirogoj,” HRT journalist Šime Vičević reported.

He pointed out that a scientific-professional conference title “Always and Everything for Croatia” will be held in Zagreb today, where a large number of scientists, historians and politicians are expected. And in the evening at the Vatroslav Lisinski concert hall, a ceremony will be held on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth, at the same place where the first general assembly of the HDZ was held in 1990. 2,000 guests are expected at the ceremony.

“To thank all veterans and the entire Croatian people for supporting President Franjo Tuđman at crucial historical moments for the European continent, but also for realizing the centuries-old dream of the Croatian people, which was to achieve an independent, free and internationally recognized Croatia in conditions that were not easy, but in fact very difficult. Today, Croatia has been internationally recognized for 30 years, it has achieved all strategic goals - it is a member of the EU, the North Atlantic Alliance, we have democracy, built institutions and continuously improve the original goal - to all fight, strive and work for a better life for every Croatian person,” said Prime Minister Plenković.

Mate Granić, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs, pointed out that President Tuđman was a historian, general and statesman.

“The thing I remember the most are the historical state actions that created the modern Croatian state, first defended and then liberated,” said Granić.

The celebration of the hundredth anniversary of the birth of the first Croatian president caused divisions and as a result a ceremony was organized not only in Zagreb but also in Vukovar.

This morning, the HDZ delegation from Vukovar-Srijem County laid wreaths at the memorial cemetery, and in the afternoon there will be a symposium organized by a circle of his former associates, and the president's younger son - Stjepan Tuđman.
