Traditional Croatian recipes from Vojvodina collected in new cookbook

A new cookbook, Baking Traditional Dishes of Croats in Vojvodina, has been presented in the village of Đurđin in the Bač area of Vojvodina. The book was published by Hrvatska riječ.

The collection brings together traditional recipes gathered from communities where Croats live, including Tavankut, Đurđin and Subotica, as well as Bereg, Monoštor, Sonta, Vajska, Bač, Sombor, Sot, Šid, Gibarac and Surčin.

Over more than four years of fieldwork, around 200 old recipes were collected, with approximately 80 selected for publication.

Editor Zlata Vasiljević said the book offers more than instructions for preparing traditional dishes. The recipes also provide insight into the way of life, customs and distinctive characteristics of the communities and regions where the dishes have been prepared for generations.

Part of a wider cultural heritage project

The book is based on the Kuhar (Cook) column, which has been published for years in the Hrvatska riječ weekly.

The publication is part of a wider project titled Cultural and Gastronomic Heritage of Croats in Preserving Identity for the Future, funded through the Croatia-Serbia cross-border cooperation programme of Croatia's Ministry of Regional Development and EU Funds.

The project partners are Hrvatska riječ and Plava Vinkovačka Television.

The book's presentation was accompanied by a tasting of traditional dishes prepared according to recipes featured in the collection.
