Šibenik is the host of the 13th International Cello Competition. The organizer of the competition is the Ivan Lukačić Music School in Šibenik, and the program is being held at the Arsen House of Art.

The gentle sounds of the cello echo these days within ‘Arsen’s House’. The 13th Janigro Junior competition was attended by 70 participants from 17 countries in Europe and the world.

“I am very happy with my program and I really love it. I’m not going with any intent to win. Of course, I will play the best I can, but here I am really glad to listen to other competitors and I am glad to actually compare myself with the rest of the world at my age,” said Petar Đula Vrbanić, a cellist from Zagreb.

“It's a big motive for me. I was supposed to be here a second time now, but the first time I couldn’t come. I have been to four competitions so far and all the awards I won were first prizes,” said Tomislav Zadro, a cellist from Zagreb.

“Young cellists already at the age of 15 to 16, let alone 21, are already real professionals. So it's about exceptional quality, or a very high level of playing. We have candidates from the USA, Korea and China,” said Ruža Raguž Cukrov, the director of the Janigro Junior 2022 competition.

Among the young musicians are three students from the Ivan Lukačić Music School - the host of the competition.

“We have an excellent cellist class, an excellent teacher. Our cellists achieve very good results in various competitions,” said the director.

Competitors in six different categories are judged by an international five-member jury composed of eminent cellists - musicians and pedagogues.

“It's a great privilege to be here and I'm really looking forward to it. There will be a lot of candidates. New talents, a lot of beautiful music,” said Sara Minemoto, a member of the jury.

The competition in memory of the famous Italian, the founder of the Zagreb Soloists, will last until April 23, and will end with a gala concert of the winners.
