The 69th Dubrovnik Summer Festival officially get underway this evening. More than eighty musical, theatrical, and ballet performances will take place throughout the festival until August 25th.

Culture Minister Nina Obuljen Koržinek said focus this year was in attracting a younger and more diverse audience.

"This festival definitely has a future, thanks to a vibrant energy and overall vision. All we need to do is develop things further. On the one hand, there is a heavy reliance on tradition - which helps make this festival so special. On the other hand, there's an openness showed towards modern artistic interpretation across the board with various European partners. I must praise the steps taken in attracting larger audiences, which is a priority of the Culture Ministry," said the culture minister.

At the same time, theatre director Dora Ruždjak Podolski said it was important to maintain the festival's fundamental principles, which she says are first and foremost "deeply ambient performances, nurturing the tradition of the festival's theatrical ensembles."

And as far as the theatrical program is concerned, priority continues to be maintaining the highest quality possible.

Croatia's oldest cultural manifestation opens this evening in Dubrovnik at 9 pm.
