One of the most powerful stories of Croatian courage, sacrifice and love for the homeland has been captivating audiences on the opera stage for 150 years.

Today, November 4, the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb marks the anniversary with a gala performance of Nikola Šubić Zrinjski, the opera by Ivan pl. Zajc. Having transcended the boundaries of opera, the work has become a symbol of Croatian identity, unity and the pursuit of freedom.

Premiered on November 4, 1876, at the then National Land Theatre in Zagreb's Upper Town, under the direction of the composer himself, Nikola Šubić Zrinjski has become one of the most significant works in Croatia's musical heritage.

Inspired by the historic defense of the fortress of Szigetvár in 1566, with a libretto by Hugo Badalić, the opera tells a story of courage, loyalty and sacrifice that continues to resonate with Croatian audiences.

An opera that made history

A special place in the history of the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb belongs to the performance of Nikola Šubić Zrinjski on October 14, 1895, which marked the ceremonial opening of the theatre's current building.

Over the past 150 years, Zajc's masterpiece has brought together generations of artists and audiences, becoming an enduring part of Croatia's cultural and national heritage.

A symbol of belonging, courage and freedom

Iva Hraste-Sočo, director of the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb, stressed that the anniversary is about much more than commemorating an important date in theatre history.

"This is a work that has transcended the boundaries of opera over the centuries and become part of our collective cultural memory — a symbol of belonging, courage and the pursuit of freedom," she said.

She emphasized that the gala performance pays tribute to Ivan pl. Zajc and all the artists who have kept this exceptional work alive over the past century and a half. It is also a reminder of the importance of passing Croatia's artistic heritage on to future generations.

Gala performance featuring leading opera artists

The performance will be conducted by Ivan Josip Skender and directed by Krešimir Dolenčić, whose production premiered in 1994.

The title role will be performed by Ljubomir Puškarić, with Valentina Fijačko Kobić as Eva, Darija Auguštan as Jelena and Domagoj Dorotić as Juranić.

The cast also includes Ozren Bilušić, Ivo Gamulin, Luciano Batinić, Stjepan Franetović, Davor Nekjak, Danijel Vukelja, Josip Galić, Jakov Kalajžić and Alen Ruško.

The performance will feature the Opera's orchestra and choir, along with the ballet ensemble of the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb.

Special tribute to Sonja Kastl

The gala performance will be dedicated to the memory of the recently deceased Sonja Kastl, a distinguished Croatian ballerina, choreographer and ballet pedagogue who choreographed this production.

With this tribute, the Croatian National Theatre will honor an artist who left an indelible mark on Croatian ballet and theatre.

A double anniversary for Croatian ballet

Alongside the 150th anniversary of the premiere of Nikola Šubić Zrinjski, the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb is also marking 150 years of Croatian ballet.

An anniversary program celebrating the rich tradition and future of Croatian ballet was officially presented in the theatre's foyer.

Together, these two major anniversaries highlight the richness of Croatia's cultural heritage and the artistic achievements that have helped preserve Croatian identity across generations.
